The Atkins Diet

Atkins Diet in UK by: Dana Scripca

The most recent shocking news related to Atkins diet UK is while dieting Atkins, people don’t feel the drive to eat more.

overweight and obesity research paper

British population is largely enjoying Atkins diet

Though The United Kingdom doesn’t have to tackle serious issues regarding overweight and obesity, there are enough British dieting. It is said that about two fifths of the British population are currently dieting in some form or another - 58% have tried dieting in the past five years. An estimated three million people in the UK have tried the controversial Atkins Diet, suggests a poll; 7% of men and 10% of women had given it a try. Despite all the warnings coming from dieticians, the Atkins diet is extremely popular, as it is in the United States. Why on earth is this diet so largely voted ? Nutritionists are puzzled and are trying to explain this. The public already knows that Atkins is more effective than standard diets (those low-fat or controlled-calories diet) in losing weight; no one could persuade them to give up Atkins. Up-to-the-minute research point out that, in the Atkins diet, lowering appetite is the one responsible for losing pounds, not ketosis. Atkins diet UK has recently given some challenging topics to talk about.

controversial theory obesity

Secrets from dieters’ diaries

A very recent BBC show disclosed a completely new point of view regarding Atkins diet’s success. On 12 August 2004, a few specialists were invited by narrator Barbara Flynn to debate Atkins advantages and drawbacks. The Atkins diet was "chopped" by Prof. Joe Milward, Dr. Theodore Vanitallie, Dr. Gary Foster, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Mary Vernon, Dr. Paul Robinson, Prof. Joseph Donelly, Dr. Susan Jebb, prof. Arm Astrup.

obesity surgery done in u s cheapest

Participants shared a shocking finding. Ketosis has nothing to do with pounds’ dissapearance; actually, by lowering appetite, Atkins dieters are losing weight! Nutrition experts have always been terrified by the fact that Atkins encouraged so many fats and had no limits to calories. The Atkins theory overturned all that dieticians had been trying to induce for years. People "wrongly" believed that, if you want to get thinner, all you have to do is eat less or reduce calories. This theory was swept away by the Atkins dietary approach.

Ketosis - out; appetite - in

Confused by the spectacular results, the nutrition care community couldn’t make this out. The conclusion was drawn after diaries of a group of Atkins dieters were scanned. Reading all the notes, it was clear that Atkins followers have a higher command of their appetite. By eating protein-rich foods regularly, they do not need to eat large amounts, British specialists from BBC show conclude. Appetite is somehow normalized by the food the dieters are actually eating. It is so simple, so unexpected. The father of this dietary approach had also mentioned it, among others, but only after private diet diaries had been "scanned", the appetite’s relevance finally became prevalent.

The recent BBC show guests said that this finding is extremely interesting because appetite is one of the most fundamental human instincts. It is argued that it is hugely important, since without eating appropriate and sufficient food a human being cannot survive or move, or act, or think, or work. Moreover, hunger drive is considered "incredibly powerful". The bottom line is that the Atkins way of eating acts like an "appetite killer" and this is tremendously important to understand the diet’s mechanism.

What Are The Main Causes Of Obesity In America Today - The Cost of Doing Nothing

Causes of Obesity - The Cost of Doing Nothing

The causes and health risks of obesity are well documented, and once an obesity sufferer understands the consequences of this medical condition, then it’s relatively simple for a program of weight reduction to be put in place.

Those persons suffering from obesity should know the causes of their condition and the health dangers involved. Once the causes of obesity and the subsequent health risks of obesity are understood then it becomes easier for overweight - obese - people to appreciate the need for a major life style change.

Firstly Change Your Diet

 obesity and uk rates

Nutritional and medical experts are of the unanimous opinion that obesity is caused my two major factors - diet and an inactive lifestyle, with diet being recognized as the primary cause.

A diet consisting principally of processed foods, high in protein, sugar, salt, with an plenty of fat, without any fresh fruit and vegetables, is a diet with one outcome - obesity. In this case a complete change of diet is necessary to halt the progress of the disease.

The obesity sufferer and other overweight people need to adopt a healthy diet that consists of plenty of fresh fruit (two portions daily) and vegetables (five portions daily). A moderate amount of lean meat, poultry or fish. Nuts, pulses, grains and whole meal products should also be part of the diet. Alcohol drinks in moderation are acceptable, but sugary soft drinks should be kept to a minimum.

Good eating habits can be quickly taken up, and passed onto children. Similarly bad eating habits are quickly adopted by children, thus ensuring the obesity problem passes from one generation to another.

Then Get More Exercise

 obesity in austraila

The other major cause of obesity is a lack of regular physical exercise, especially in the case of children. Children are not getting the exercise they need to keep healthy. Too much of their spare time is spent in inactive pursuits - watching TV and playing computer games, instead of playing outdoors.

Exercise can take many forms - a quick walk, jogging, running, playing tennis, squash, swimming, cycling - the list is endless. But for a person just coming to terms with the need to engage in exercise, then a walk of about 45 minutes a day would be sufficient. This level of exercise is enough to prevent the build up of fat within the body providing the right diet is eaten.

A change in life style involving diet and exercise, together with a total commitment on the part of the sufferer to successfully lose weight, can provide a permanent solution for obesity.

Beware the Health Effects of Obesity

By failing to embrace a healthy diet and regular exercise obese people be susceptible to health risks associated with obesity, many of them potentially life threatening. This factor alone should encourage obese people to adopt a weight loss plan.

These life-threatening conditions include some of the following:

Type 2 diabetes - considered a killer disease, it’s caused by excessive overweight and leads to blindness, loss of limbs, and eventually death.

Chronic heart disease, hypertension, disease of the arteries, stroke

Several forms of cancer are more prevalent in obese people - colon, prostate, bowel, kidney, and breast

Arthritis is more common amongst overweight people.

In addition to these medical conditions, excessively obese people will also experience difficulties in enjoying a normal lifestyle. They will experience difficulties in moving about (lack of exercise will highlight their problem). They may even have problems in being able to breathe.

Whilst the severe health problems are bad enough, an obesity sufferer may experience the adverse social effects of obesity. The biggest factors here are a lack of self-respect from the public and perhaps more important, social discrimination, especially in the workplace.

Obesity sufferers are being helped to overcome their health condition with a new fat binder product recently released on the market. This product has the ability to reject 28% of the fat in a recently eaten meal and prevent it from being stored in the body, and has been recognized by government agencies internationally as being an effective weight control product.

The author has a personal interest in a wide range of health and social issues and has contributed to web sites dealing with topics such as the best way to lose weight and how to lose weight. The author also gives his opinion about a newly released weight loss pill.

TLC For Weight Loss - The TLC Diet?

Diabetes: What Is The Tlc Diet?

A lot of people who have diabetes along with abnormal cholesterol levels are placed on the TLC diet. What this particular diet does is it reduces the intake of high cholesterol foods and promotes quick weight loss. Aside from its dietary restrictions, this particular weight loss plan also calls for an increase in physical activity. Here is a little more information on what to expect.

controversial theory obesity

While on the TLC diet, the participant’s total fat consumption should be 25 to 35% (or less) of total carbs eaten per day. Saturated fats should be less than 7% of the total calories eaten in a day while polyunsaturated fats (such as that found in liquid vegetable oils and margarines) should equal 10% of the total calorie intake per day. Monounsaturated fats, on the other hand, should be no less than 20% of the daily calorie intake. Eating all of these fats in their required proportions reduces cholesterol levels and promotes quick weight loss.

therapeutic lifestyle changes for weight loss

The next step towards the TLC diet is the proper intake of carbohydrates. Carbs should equal 50 to 60% of our daily calorie intake. This particular diet also encourages the participant to consume a decent amount of fiber. The daily intake should be 20 to 30 grams. Fiber can be obtained through the consumption of many foods such as oats, barley, psyllium, and beans. Fiber is beneficial because it helps you feel full longer and it promotes healthy digestion. Another important part of the diet is lean protein consumption. It is recommended that protein equal 15 to 20 % of the daily calorie intake. And lastly, the participants should maintain the daily cholesterol intake below 200 milligrams. This is just a little bit of information about the TLC diet for diabetics. Usually your doctor will recommend this diet if you need to lose weight or reduce your cholesterol levels.

Overweight And Obesity Research Paper On How British Scientists Discover Gene that Contributes to Obesity

British Scientists Discover Gene that Contributes to Obesity

A group of British scientists believe they have found a common strand of DNA that could be a marker for obesity. Discovery of the FTO gene means new knowledge to tackle obesity and related health issues.

British Scientists Discover Gene that Contributes to Obesity obesity in austraila

By Erin Peterson

British researchers have discovered a gene that can be linked to increased body fat and will help to explain why some people weigh more than others regardless of similar lifestyles.

Scientists classify this particular strand of DNA as the FTO gene. It was found to be a common trait in people with type 2 diabetes, but the gene does not affect insulin production. Rather, the gene is found to be associated with increased body fat.

After making this association, scientists looked into DNA databases to see if other studies revealed that the gene may predispose a person to obesity. The research found that a strain of FTO was closely correlated with obesity in other findings as well.

difference between obesity overweight

Scientists concluded that those having one copy of the FTO gene are 30% more likely and those with two copies of the gene are 70% more likely to be obese than those with a different version of the gene.

The study sample included mostly white European adults. More than 38,000 blood samples were viewed and analyzed for common characteristics. One in six of the samples was found to carry two copies of the FTO gene.

While this gene may explain why some people are more predisposed to weight gain than others, it should not take all of the blame. Research findings show that the presence of this gene causes carriers to gain only around seven pounds more than others.

how many people are affected by obesity

online weight loss clinics that prescribe phentermine

Bad diet and lack of exercise are still the chief cause why about one-third of Americans are obese and twice that many are overweight. Overweight is classified by a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more and obesity by a BMI of 30 or more. Body mass index is an indicator of body fatness based on a calculation of a person’s weight and height.

In the British study, scientists did not specify the diet and exercise habits of the sample population so researchers were not able to infer any correlation between lifestyle choices and the gene.

"We know very little about how different versions of this gene alter how much fat you have. It could influence your appetite, your tolerance to exercise, or your metabolic rate. The next steps will be to address these questions," notes researcher Timothy Frayling, PhD.

One possible course for future research would be to study how people with different copies of the FTO gene respond to various diet and exercise regimes.

PASTE HEREThe more that can be learned about the FTO gene, the more information medical researchers will have to design weight loss drugs or programs for obese individuals and diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

"Even though we have yet to fully understand the role played by the FTO gene in obesity, our findings are a source of great excitement," said Oxford University professor Mark McCarthy. "New scientific insights will hopefully pave the way for us to explore novel ways of treating this condition."

So far, researchers have studied only the DNA of white Europeans, but they feel confident that the findings will be similar in other ethnic groups. They hope to repeat their study on African Americans and South Asians next, as both populations have documented problems with obesity and related problems.

Obesity is the leading cause of many long-term health issues like heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. A recent U.S. government report shows that obesity and its related illnesses are now the top cause of medical spending and concern in the United States - overtaking smoking or alcohol.

Cost of Lap-Band Surgery: Obesity Surgery Done In U.S Is The Cheapest & Safest

Cost of Lap-Band Surgery: Know About The Expenditures Of Lap-Band Surgery

Lap-Band Surgery is the surgery done to reduce extra fat, which sometimes a person put on because of overeating. Lap-Band Surgery is becoming popular in US by leaps and bounds. People prefer Lap-Band Surgery because it is reversible and adjustable. Chances of failure of Lap-Band Surgery are very less. There is no cutting and stapling of stomach involved.

controversial theory obesity

Lap-Band Weight Loss Surgery is the surgery done to insert an inflatable silicone prosthetic device called Lap-Band around the stomach. This Lap-Band is an adjustable device which is adjusted according to the need of the patient via the surgeon. Lap-Band Weight Loss Surgery works on the principle that after the surgery stomach allows less food to enter because the size of the stomach is reduced due to the Lap-Band. Lap-Band which is placed around the stomach divides the stomach into two pouches. Upper pouch receives the food and as the food enters into the upper pouch its size increases and it applies pressure on the Lap-Band. Lap-Band inflates and person feels that his hunger has been satisfied. This way, person does not have to remain hungry because of dieting.

Some post-operative complications after the Lap-Band Surgery can be seen and some of the digestive complications include nausea, vomiting, gastro-esophageal reflux, stoma obstruction, constipation, dysphasia, diarrhea, and abnormal stools. Erosion can occur. This is where the band may wear a small area on the outside of the stomach which can lead to the migration of the band to the inside of the stomach.

obesity surgery done in u s cheapest

The amount you pay for your surgery will vary. There isn’t an established cost or price for lap band surgery. Your surgery may or may not be covered under your current health insurance plan. If not, travel to other countries for weight loss surgery has become more popular. Travel to Mexico is just one way to get a low cost lap band surgery. There are many countries offering cheap or low cost weight loss surgery or Lap-Band Surgery Compare costs of surgery along with all travel expenses.

Make sure if you’re traveling away from home for surgery though, to consider the travel time and related travel expenses for both the surgery and the follow-up appointments. Do not underestimate the number of follow-up appointments you might need and find out if you can do those in the US or your country of residence. Many factors can affect the total cost of lap band surgery, including the gastric surgeon you choose, the country you choose to have the surgery performed in and what fees are included or not included in the total price. Search well before going for Lap-Band Surgery, how and where you can get the Lap-Band Surgery done at reasonable prices?

Controversial Theories On Obesity - Top Ten Fad Diets

Top Ten Fad Diets

People are turning to fad diets as a short cut for attaining that perfect physique. However many of these diets make misleading and false claims. Most of them have no scientific basis. Read on to learn about the top ten fad diets.

Top Ten Fad Diets

There is lot of false information on the subject of nutrition and diets. Fad diets may have opposite or undesirable effects compared to what they are claimed to achieve. Fad diets may make unrealistic claims. They may require you to restrict or avoid certain food items. They may promise fast almost magical results. They may require you to eat some food items at specific times in the day. They may also advocate consuming dietary supplements. Some good reasons why they should be avoided is dehydration, nutritional imbalance, kidney failure and osteoporosis.

Some of the top fad diets are listed below:-

Lemonade diet

You have to stay away from solid food. You cannot consume plain water. You have to take water mixed with lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. You need to drink six to twelve glasses of this lemonade mixture daily. If you are overweight, you should use less maple syrup. If you are underweight, use more quantities of maple syrup. If you feel hungry, have another glass of lemonade.

3-day diet

The reasoning behind the 3-Day Diet plan is that if you eat a specific mix of foods you will create a chemical reaction in your digestive system, boosting your metabolism and causing the body to burn fat at a faster rate than usual. Dieters are to be on the diet program for only 3 days and must take a 2-day break before repeating it again. The reason behind this weight loss plan may sound interesting, but has no scientific basis whatsoever.

Cabbage Soup diet

You have to consume only cabbage soup for seven days. It does not furnish the essential nutrients for a well-balanced diet. Cabbage does not reduce weight by itself. Concentrating on only one food and excluding the others is probably the reason for weight. You’ll eventually develop a distaste of the soup and eat less and less of it. Less food means fewer calories, and fewer calories lead to weight loss.

Atkins diet

You eat only high protein and high fat foods thereby consuming fewer calories. Carbohydrates are severely restricted like bread, potatoes, rice, chocolate, cereals and sugar. The carbohydrates are added back little by little into the diet. As the diet is nutritionally inadequate, supplements of vitamins and minerals are required. It is not known what effect the Atkins plan has on health in the long-term.

Raw Food diet

It is a vegan diet. Meat, chicken, eggs, dairy and animal products are to be completely avoided. Foods permitted on the diet are uncooked vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains, believed to contain more nutrients and digestion-aiding enzymes than cooked foods.

tlc for weight lossobesity and uk rates
The Negative Calorie diet

It involves eating foods that burn more calories to digest than you will consume. It is controversial because the theory is not scientifically sound. No foods actually have ‘negative calories’.

3-hour diet

It is based on the premise that it doesn’t matter what you eat but when you eat it. If more than three hours pass between meals, the body turns on its natural ’starvation protection mechanism’, causing the body to consume muscle, and adversely affects one’s resting metabolism. The 3-Hour diet recommends eating smaller and more frequent meals to lower the levels of the belly fat producing hormone, Cortisol, and decrease levels of insulin and cholesterol.

The Grapefruit Diet

Its duration is 12 to 18 days. It is claimed that there is an enzyme in the grapefruit which acts as a ‘fat-burner’. You are required to eat grapefruit or drink its juice with every meal. Protein rich foods are permitted. Also you have to drink at least eight glasses of water everyday.

<The Grape Diet

You should only eat grapes and drink water. You can eat the grapes whole or for variety, slice them up into small pieces. Water can be drunk at all times but not within an hour after eating the grapes as this will only dilute the strength of the natural chemicals in the grapes. The grapes must be washed thoroughly to get rid of any pesticides that might be on the skin.

The Hollywood Diet

Its duration is two days. You have to consume a special juice. You are prohibited from drinking or smoking. It claims to reduce weight by 10 pounds in 48 hours. The juice is a mixture of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential oils.

Obesity Surgery Done In The U.S Is The Cheapest - Cheap Gastric Bypass Surgery

Cheap Gastric Bypass Surgery

The latest statistics covering weight loss surgery between 1998 and 2004 have just been published and the figures for the growth in the number of surgeries performed each year are truly staggering. Perhaps most surprising however is what happened to the cost of gastric bypass surgery over this period.

It is common knowledge that obesity surgery is on the rise but the latest statistics make chilling reading. Perhaps most surprising though is the fact that the same report, issued by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, shows that the cost of gastric bypass surgery is actually falling.

obesity surgery done in u s cheapest

In 1998 there were a total of 13,386 bariatric surgeries performed and this figure rose to a staggering 121,055 procedures by 2004 - the most recent year for which figures are available. By contrast however the average cost of surgery fell from $10,970 to $10,395 in the same period. These figures are quoted at 2004 levels adjusted for inflation and represent the cost of inpatient care but do not include physician fees.

The vast majority of surgeries were seen between the ages of 55 and 64 (which accounted for about 85% of all surgeries) and was far more common amongst women than men, with women accounting for some 82% of surgeries.

The report also reveals that during this period gastric bypass surgery (in which the stomach is reduced in size and a section of the intestine is bypassed to reduce food absorption) remained the most popular form of surgery and accounted for some 94% of all procedures.

The report covers all forms of bariatric surgery including gastric bypass operations, vertical banded gastroplasty and gastric banding or ‘lap band’ surgery and also takes into account many newly introduced techniques such as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and robotic surgery. As however some of the latest weight loss surgical techniques have only recently gained approval from the FDA it is likely that the next set of statistics to be released will show a drop in gastric bypass surgery in favor of such procedures as lap banding.

how many people are affected by obesity

In 1998 the overall hospital costs for bariatric surgery amounted to $147 million and, by 2004, this figure had risen to $1.3 billion. In 2004 approximately 78% of surgeries were paid for by private insurance, 7% were funded by Medicare and 5% were funded Medicaid. Most surprisingly only 5% of surgeries were uninsured which would seem to finally lay the myth to rest that it is virtually impossible to get your insurance company to meet the cost of gastric bypass surgery.

As obesity continues to grow at an alarming rate and overall costs soar it will be interesting to see just how the cost of gastric bypass surgery will met over the next few years. GastricBypassFacts.info is a substantial resource center providing information on all aspects of surgery .

What Are The Main Causes Of Obesity In America Today

Causes of Obesity in America - There is More Involved Than You Think

Obesity is a big problem in America. What are the causes and what can be done?

Causes of Obesity in America - There is More Involved Than You Think

That the main causes of obesity in America have to do with diet and exercise is no surprise to anyone, I’m sure. Fast food, satellite television and video games have contributed to our poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. The obesity fairy has not been sprinkling dust on us while we sleep.

A recent study done by researchers at the University of Alabama has produced ten reasons for obesity in America that may possibly hold some clues to other causes for the weight problems we’re experiencing in the U.S. .

The "Obesity in America" List:

1. We Don’t Get Enough Sleep

It is true that the metabolism slows down when the body does not get the rest it needs. We have a sleep deficit in the United States. America needs to get its Z’s!

2. Environmental Pollution
Hormones influence weight gain. Our hormones are affected by pollutants and pollutants are everywhere!

3. Climate Controlled Environments
When the temperature changes, the body has to step up the metabolism to adjust. Many of us live and work in temperature controlled buildings. We don’t have to feel uncomfortable, so our bodies don’t adjust.

4.The Decrease in Smoking
Thousands of Americans have quit smoking. Quitting smoking is known to cause weight gain through two different factors - the metabolism slows down and we tend to eat more.

5. The Increased Use of Medicine
Several of the prescriptions we take for our health have weight gain as a side-effect. The use of these prescription drugs has risen and is still rising.

6. Age and Ethnicity
Middle age spread and Hispanic origin - The middle age population is growing and so is the Hispanic population. Generally, Hispanics are heavier than the rest of our ethnic groups.

7. New Moms Are Older Moms
Some results of research has shown that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the better the chances that she will have an obese child.

8. The Environment of our Ancestors
The environmental problems that may have caused ancestor’s obesity may be contributing to our obesity through DNA.

9. Obesity and Fertility
Studies have shown that obese men and women are more fertile than their leaner counterparts. If obesity can indeed be traced to genetics, then the amount of babies being born who could one day be obese increases dramatically!

10. Obesity and Marriage
Obese people tend to marry each other. Combine genetics with eating habits and you’ve got a whole generation of obese children who could one day possibly be obese adults.

The reasons seem to be valid ones. Still, I think I’ll have a salad today. Hold the fries.

What Causes Obesity In Austraila, U.K and America

What Causes Obesity

What causes obesity? Well, obesity is not caused by the "big 2" - overeating and no exercise alone…..Obesity is multifactorial in origin. The multifactors of obesity are discussed here for more insightful understanding of this disease - so you can better battle the bulge.

Obesity refers to a state of a person’s bodyweight when it’s 20% or more above normal bodyweight.

Obesity increases risks of developing high blood pressure, diabetes (type 2), heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease and cancer of the breast, prostate and colon.

In the US, about 300,000 deaths per year are directly related to obesity……..

It’s not just a health hazard, it’s a life threatening disease as well.

Understanding what causes obesity will help you battle it more effectively.

And surprise!Surprise! You’d think that "no exercise and overeating" are the culprits…….

These 2 of course are the main causes since we are bombarded daily with plenty of high calorie food, but because of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, we don’t exercise at all or don’t do enough exercise, so we struggle real hard not to get fat.

But there’s also other causes - other than the "big 2" - "no exercise and overeating", that contribute to obesity.

Ahem…….If you hate exercise and like to eat, you can now breathe easier knowing that "no exercise and overeating" are not the only culprits that cause obesity……

Right on. I bet you want to know what’re these other factors that cause obesity…..Let’s have a look at them and see whether they resonate with you.

Not Enough Sleep is What Causes Obesity

You’re surprised?

You think it should be the exact opposite, right? That not enough sleep would cause you to lose weight (because it affects your body’s health), not to gain weight!

However, several studies suggest that there’s a relationship between how much you sleep and your weight gain…..

The first is the US Health & Nutrition Examination Survey which concludes that if you sleep less than 7 hours per night, you tend to have a higher body mass index (BMI) than a person who sleeps more hours.

The other is a study conducted by the US Nurses’Health, which tracks 68,000 women for 16 years in which it finds that women who sleep an average of 5 hours per night gain more weight than women who sleep 6 hours, who in turn gain more weight than women who sleep 7 hours.

Obesity reserachers have suggested that this is so due to the fact that if you don’t have enough sleep, your metabolism could be changed as Leptin, the hormone that signals satiety decreases while Ghrelin, the hormone which signals hunger, increases and this cranks up your appetite.

We all know obesity affects sleep, so these studies’ results which say that not enough sleep could lead to weight gain are really "eye-openers"…….

And we’re sleeping less, that’s a fact we can’t deny, given our hectic lifestyle and the firece demands life put on us.

The Americans slept an average of 8.5 hours per night in 1960. In a 2002 poll by the National Sleep Foundation, the
average hour had decreased to less than 7 hours per night.

The results show that the decreased hours of sleep was partly associated with the increase in obesity.

Prenatal Effects Are What Causes Obesity

The odds that you’ll become fat could be set, at least in part, before you’re born. It’s shown that obese mothers would likely give birth to children who’ll become obese themselves later in life.

You could say that this is largely due to genetics but there’s evidence to suggest that some "intra-uterine programming" has taken place here.

In the study for mice during pregnancy, offsprings of mice fed with high-fat food are more likely to become fat than offsprings of mice fed with normal food.

Fat Equals Fecund - This Is What Causes Obesity

If you’re fatter, chances are you’ll have more children. A study carried out by Minot State University in North Dakota concludes this.

It shows that there’s a small but significant correlation between BMI and reproductive rates as normal weight women have an average of 3.2 children while overweight and obese women have an average of 3.5 children.

The intriguing question is this:

Does having more children cause women to gain weight or does being overweight or obese cause women to produce more children?

Answer is probably both.

Having more children increases your chance of escalating into the "fat" territory, if for no other reason than poor sleep.   On the other hand, being obese or overweight can lead to lower socio-economic status, which is in turn associated with having more children, the study reveals.

Older In Age is What Causes Obesity

Well, if you’re older, you tend to be fatter than others! Survey by the US National Center for Health Statistics found that if you were aged between 40 - 79, you were 3 times as likely to be heavier as those aged younger.

The most probable reason?

Ah…Sigh….Due to decrease in your metabolism……

As you get older, your body’s ability to metabolize food slows down. This is why you would notice that you eat the same amount of food and do the same activities as you did when you were 20 years old, but at age 40, you gain weight.

Temperature Effects Cause Obesity

Studies have shown that in comfortable temperature, you use less energy, thereby burning less body fat. In hotter temperature environment, you’ll sweat a lot more which in turn uses more energy. There’s also evidence to suggest that you’ll reduce the amount of food intake in hotter temperature environment.

Less Smoking Or Quitting Smoking Causes Obesity

If you’re a smoker, you’re likely thinner than others. So, if you cut down smoking or quit altogether, you’ll pile on the pounds, though no one knows why this is so…..Most likely is because nicotine is an appetite suppressant and seemingly can raise your metabolic rate…..

The US National Center for Health Statistics calculates that smokers kicking the habit have been responsible for a small but significant portion of the US obesity epidemic.

The Center works out that smokers who quit in the previous decade are more likely to be obese than smokers and those who never smoke. Among men, almost 50% of the quitters are obese compared with 37% of non-smokers and 28% of smokers.

Pollution Can Cause Obesity

Our environment has become more polluted and inevitably, we’re exposed more to pollutants like industrial chemicals (dyes, plastic wastes, pesticides, herbicides, gaseous compound, solvents….).

There’s evidence that a small amount of some of these chemicals can lead to weight gain. Studies have found that when people are exposed to these chemicals found in food, the higher the toxic level in the food, the greater the body weight.

This is because some of these chemicals are endocrine disruptors that disrupt the functions of hormones like oestrogen.

You know right, when your hormone (oestrogen) does not function well, it wreaks havoc in your body, including weight gain?

therapeutic lifestyle changes for weight loss

Drug Use Is What Causes Obesity

Some drugs have ugly side effects - one of the most common ones - weight gain.

Want to know which drugs?

Well, drug for high blood pressure, is one.

Drugs to treat HIV, is another.

Endometriosis drugs to treat endometriosis, is a classic example that can fatten you up.

Contraceptive pills will pile pounds on you.

Diabetes medications will pad you out…..

So, don’t be too over-dependent on drugs…..

First Child In Older Women - A Cause For Obesity

The mean age of women giving first birth in the US has increased from 21.4 in 1970 to 24.9 in 2000.

The implication for this is that an older woman at first birth seems to be a risk factor for obesity.

The results from the US National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute’s study found that the odds of a child being obese increases by about 14% for every 5 extra years of his or her mother’s age, though no one knows for sure why.

Could poor sleep cause this? Probably.

Also, as family size decreases, first-borns make up for a greater share of the population - evidenced in the US wherein in 1976, 9.6% of women in their 40s had one child but in 2004, the percentage had increased to 17.4%. This combination of older women and more single children could be contributing to the obesity epidemic.

Like Marrying  Like - A Cause For Obesity

I’m sure you’ve seen the pattern -

We tend to pair off according to looks.

So we do like wise when comes to body size…..

If you’re thin, you’re more likely to marry a thin person and if you’re fat, you’re more likely to marry a fat person…..

controversial theory obesity

controversial theory obesity obesity oklahoma pediatric

On its own, this would not account for the increase in obesity but if we include other factors such as genetics and obese people produce more children, they could amplify the increase in obesity from other causes.

In conclusion, obesity isn’t due to a single cause but is multifactorial in origin.

The causes discussed here are by no means exhaustive……

You could have other causes like genetics, overeating, slower metabolism, gender, illness, psychological factors, diet rich in simple carbohydrates, frequency of eating…….

S-o-o-o-o,

Can you then jump in glee because "no exercise and overeating" are not the only major causes of obesity? Since you hate to exercise and like to eat? (Aren’t we all?)

Can you then don’t do exercise and eat with no restrain?

Hey, certainly not! A reasonable amount of exercise and healthy eating are still on the card for you…..

What the obesity researchers try to say is this -

when we think of what causes obesity, we normally point to "no exercise and overeating" as the culprits….

Oh, they are.

But if you’re still on the heavier side even after doing enough exercise and eat healthily, then you might want to look beyond these "big 2 " factors to find out the true reason(s) for your weight problem.

Other factors like those mentioned above could cause obesity as well…….

It’s good for you to find out, to better address your problem.

However, adopting a healthy lifestyle that inculcates the habit of exercise and eating healthy food should be your first priority, to stave off further weight gain.

If you do this, even weight losses as small as 10% of your bodyweight can improve your health……
